The Signs Are Hilarious At Switzerland's New 'Drive-In Brothel'

 ADAM TAYLOR Source businessinsider.com AUG. 27, 2013

Zurich's new drive-in brothels opened earlier this week and they already raised a few eyebrows.

Across Europe there does seem to be a growing trend for sex drive-ins, however, with a widespread belief that it gets prostitution off the streets and into a safer environment, with similar schemes in Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

One of the most unusual aspects of the Zurich brothel — which are being referred to as "sex boxes" in Swiss media — are the signs being used at the facility, which cater both to Switzerland's multilingual society (four official languages) and perhaps an odd sense of humor.

Those looking to find the sex boxes will have to look for a discreet "red umbrella," and follow those signs to a former industrial zone where the nine boxes appear. According to Meritall Mir of GlobalPost, the customers will then "drive up one at a time along a lane reminiscent of fast-food drive-thrus" between the hours of 7pm and 5am.

Other signs pointing the way to the sex boxes show a car with a woman standing next to it. It is not clear if male prostitutes will also be allowed at the site:

"Along the way, they’ll negotiate fees and services with one of up to 40 sex workers," Mir continues. "Once an agreement is reached, they’ll join the prostitutes in a car-wash style box to complete the transaction."

The prostitutes themselves use a ticketing machine to pay a "stand fee" for the brothel's facilities. They pay this at a ticketing machine:

The customer and the prostitute then drive to a covered area where they complete the transaction. The poster on the wall behind is not an instructional sign but a reminder to use condoms:

There are a variety of rules to keep the situation at the "sex boxes" safe and sanitary. These are explained in the sign below.

We've done our best to translate (going right to left then working down):

No one under the age of eighteen.

Only cars can use the facility — no motorbikes, people on foot, or bicycles.

Just one client at a time.

Use the facilities provided, not the outdoor space.

Again, do not use the outdoor space.

Do not go off facility grounds

Throw away your trash.

No photography, filming, or recording (or singing, perhaps).

It may all seem a little strange but the logic is understandable — keeping prostitution out of Zurich city center and creating a safer environment for prostitutes, who will also have access to things like showers, a small kitchen, and an area to rest.

There are some doubts, however, that the prostitutes and their customers will use the facility — which is said to have cost 2.1 million Swiss francs ($2.2 million) to build and 700,000 Swiss francs ($750,000) a year to operate.

Hungarian prostitutes flooding to Zurich

In most cases, the women were pushed onto the street by brothers, uncles, cousins or even husbands

Prostitutes from Hungary are increasingly being sent to work in the red-light district on Sihlquai in the centre of Zurich, but they don’t see themselves as victims of trafficking, according to a Swiss researcher.

55 out of 56 Hungarian

Out of 56 applications recently submitted by sex workers in Zurich to the Office for Economy and Labour (AWA), all but one were from Hungarian women. The other application came from a Romanian, Der Sonntag newspaper reported.

Sascha Finger, a geographer who is writing his thesis on the “Mobility of Hungarian sex workers” at the University of Bern, came to surprising conclusions. In most cases, the women were pushed onto the street by brothers, uncles, cousins or even husbands: “The women therefore don’t see themselves as human trafficking victims,” he said.

Most Roma

Finger, who speaks Hungarian, carried out 40 interviews with prostitutes in Hungary and Switzerland last year. Most of the women are Roma, a nomadic ethnic group often existing on the fringes of Hungarian society.

“The women are sent to Switzerland by their families to earn hard cash to feed an extended family of up to 13 people, and often they have their own children,” he said.

Finger added that the complexity of Roma family relationships meant that any steps they took to get out of prostitution could have far-reaching consequences for the women.

While shouldering the burden of responsibility for their families in Hungary, the woman are also faced with serious problems in Switzerland. They generally don’t speak German and are often at the mercy of punters who occasionally fail to pay, said Finger.

Johns ‘brutal’

“I met women in Hungary who said to me they will never return to Switzerland as the men there are so brutal.”

Finger said the women were often afraid of the police, their customers, and the challenges posed by living in Switzerland. “They feel illegal even though they are not doing anything illegal.”

Zurich prosecutor Silvia Steiner is also aware of the problems Hungarian prostitutes face in Switzerland. “The dilemma for me is that the women deny they are victims of human trafficking,” she said.

Steiner has previously managed to secure convictions on human trafficking charges in the few cases she has brought to court, but in general the women refuse to push for an indictment.

“Their fear of the perpetrators and their clans in Hungary is too great,” she said.
