Prostitution in China

Crackdown on Sex City Feb 14th 2014

A CRACKDOWN on prostitution in a leading hub of China’s thriving sex trade may provide a peek into just how big the industry is nationwide. Police in the southern city of Dongguan reacted to a nationally televised exposé about local prostitution with raids (pictured at right) on February 9th against 2,000 entertainment venues and the arrests of more than 60 people. Located in Guangdong province, Dongguan has long been nicknamed “Sex City”, and the report on China Central Television (CCTV) appeared not to surprise many people. Rather, the segment and subsequent police action have drawn heavy criticism online, with thousands of people on social media expressing sympathy for the prostitutes and their clients, while mocking government officials. “It’s not only Guangdong. In all parts of the country, there are red-light districts everywhere, even in small barely developed mountain villages. Officials turn a blind eye, and police go for free,” reads a comment (in Chinese) on Sina.com from a user from Guizhou. Many comments snidely upbraided CCTV for deploying its resources this way. “If you have guts, go do a secret investigation on forced demolitions...” reads another (also in Chinese). “To come here and bully disadvantaged social groups is just senseless and shameless!” Dongguan, a gritty and sprawling manufacturing base in the Pearl River Delta, has become almost as well-known for its sex trade as for its vast complement of factories and its millions of migrant workers. The sex work industry has infiltrated the entire city, from hotels and bathhouses to hair salons and restaurants. Chinese media estimate it employs 300,000 people in Dongguan, a city of 7m-8m. Other estimates say it generates as much as 50 billion yuan ($8.25 billion) annually, or roughly 10% of the local GDP The impact could become clearer next month. Guan Qinyou, a senior economist with Minsheng Securities, says it is nearly impossible to quantify the size of the sex industry in China because so much of it operates in the grey economy, outside the law. The hit to local GDP figures for Dongguan next month, in the wake of the crackdown, may give a better picture, and perhaps allow more clarity on the size of the booming sex trade across China. “The sex trade relates directly or indirectly to many sectors including hotels, condoms, restaurants, cosmetics, daily goods travel and other things,” Guan writes in a note to investors. Analysing March GDP numbers could provide insight into the economic impact of prostitution in Dongguan, and by extension the rest of China. Minsheng’s economists have estimated the national sex trade is worth 1 trillion yuan annually. The sweep, along with recent news of an AIDS scare among sex workers in Dongguan, has led to renewed calls to legalise prostitution in China. Given China’s conservative bent and the widespread reluctance to address problems in the industry for its millions of sex workers, such a change is highly unlikely.

Chinese men and women are generally more understanding of people involved in prostitution on either side than Westerners. Although there are undoubtedly cases of girls being forced into marriage and prostitution in China, most girls do so voluntarily.

Outside of the sex industry, some girls find prostitution abhorrent, others believe that as they both grow older their men will inevitably sleep with other girls, and prefer that they sleep with a prostitute than a lover for whom they may eventually leave them. Remember that in traditional China rich guys would keep several concubines as well as a wife.

Whilst some guys take a strong moral stance against prostitutes, others regard paid sex it as an acceptable form of entertainment.

Chinese brothels come in a surprising range of different sizes and shapes.

Many of saunas in China that offer sex services are closed down by the authorities. Those who are still doing it are very carefull about their business.

They will only offer sex favours to their regular customers.

Massage ladies make more money by tips only. Their salary is usually very low. Almost all are provided rooms upstairs and basic rice meals. Nowadays the ladies mostly offer hand-job only.

If you speak any Chinese you can ask her for her number and call her and arrange a session at your place. Most of these girls are very lonely and will jump at a chance to have a boyfriend although most of these Chinese country girls are looked at in a different way by the society if they are seen with foreigners.

This is a step up from BBS girls. They need some training in massage and so on.

BBS ladies who cut your hair, manicures, pedicures and all the way up to full sex work very hard. Rooms are basic and upstairs. They serve many clients a day if they are good looking. Otherwise they can be had for a low price. If you are done in one minute that is it, you can not fuck again. Very rarely the ladies will cuddle with you after you are done. These ladies make money according to how many they serve and by tips. Basic salary is low.

This is the first job the willing ladies get who come from the provinces because it does not require a education.

KTV ladies are way up there in terms of looks and singing ability and being smily and drinking company.

There are 2 kinds of ladies. One is resident lady who are on salary and freelancers who come by every night for a line up. Freelancers are paid only if they are picked.

Whoever gets picked make big money. Mainly because lots of business clients are taken to KTV by their local business partners. Many a Chinese people go to KTV just for drinking and singing and not interested in taking a lady home. These people leave large tips to the ladies apart from regular charges.

KTV ladies tend to be young and pretty with singing skills.

Street prostitutes are the ones working for themselves. I have not heard of any streetwalkers having pimps in China unlike in America. These are the who have made money working in other establishments either got fired or got dejected and want to try to make money only themselves.

Many of these ladies have regular daytime jobs and want to make extra money. They are not drug crazed unlike in America. They usually go with Chinese guys and they charge low amount. Those who go with foreigners tend to be more hard core prostitutes. There are few ladyboys but it is hard to detect on the appearance. So be careful!

Street prostitutes also go to KTV line up.

Mamasan or papasan girls on the street. These are the ones who want to make extra money on the side. They give their phone numbers to mamasan and the mamasan will call as many ladies as she can get hold of so that you make your pick. The ladies vary from really pretty to really ugly. Most have other daytime jobs as well. Service is very cheap and once you have them you can get their phone number and call them directly for future meetings. Some I have found out are really nice and give good service.

Before going to China everyone should read these simple things I found from wikisexguide! FIrst of all there is more hookers in China than in any other country in the world!!!

  • Prostitutes are called "xiaohie," or “miss.” In Beijing there are sometimes called chicken girls." In parts of southern China they are known as "cows." Popular brothels often shuffle in new girls every week to attract repeat business. Many prostitutes are migrants from rural areas to the cities. Many willingly chose to work as prostitutes for $50 per trick rather than work for $50 a month in a factory.
  • Sometimes Chinese girls don’t like foreigners. One American man told Theroux that a Chinese pimp had told him, Americans "are too big in their penis. The girl is Chinese. She is very small. It will hurt her too much."
  • Prostitutes used to be found mostly in well known bars and karaokes in the major cities. Now they are found everywhere: on university campuses, in residential neighborhoods and even at Wal-art stores in almost every town in every province Customers are often secured through cell phone and Internet services.
  • Chinese people are generally more understanding of people involved in prostitution on either side than Westerners. Although there are undoubtedly cases of women being forced into marriage and prostitution in China, most women do so voluntarily.
